‘Peace’ is one of the most important elements for us as human beings or for the society we live in. Why? How,? and what for? is peace important? were questions in the society of early times.
Peace is the end result of a conflict. How does a conflict between persons arise? The differences in ideas between two or more parties, misunderstandings of opinions, personality disputes; personal likes and dislikes and the dominance between two or more parties, have been estimated as the reasons which result in a conflict. When a conflict reaches its peak, misfortunes such as disputes, violence and murder tend to take place.
to avoid such disasters from happening, there needs to be an individual who should be impartially neutral and act as a mediator, ensuring that peace is established between the two persons involved in a conflict. Once peace has been established, a serene and calm atmosphere is created. This gives inner joy to everyone.
The symbol or sign of peace, Is symbolised in Christianity as the dove. When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, a dove landed on him. Moreover, through sin, the relationship between God and man was broken. Jesus came to this earth as Prince of Peace to remove the rift and rebuild this broken relationship. Jesus acted as a mediator between God and man. He conquered the sins of the world through his death on the cross and brought peace to the world. He strengthened the relationship between God and man.
Since the society we live in consists of diverse people, it is troublesome by nature. Every society needs to witness conflicting situations, as it is when ‘peace’ is established. In the 19th century, Karl Marx, a German philosopher, explained the idea of history and society based on economics. The early society had different historical patterns. Those who owned lands were known as Landlords and the people who worked on those lands for wages were known as the working class. This resulted in the emergence of the upper class and lower class, or other words, the businessmen and labourers. As a result, a society based on slavery, and a capitalist society emerged. The working class were employed as slaves which resulted in conflicts based on class. Due to this, Karl Marx proposed ‘Marxism’ with the aim of eliminating such conflicts and creating a classless, state or society.
Millions of people were destroyed and many properties were damaged during the first and second world war. Except for the ones who were destroyed, the people who survived had been issued death threats and terrifying situations were observed throughout the country, according to history. Thus, the United Nations was established to avoid conflicts between countries or to act as a mediator and declare peace. When we are involved in a conflict with someone, we don’t consider the consequences that would result afterwards. However, the two parties responsible for the conflict should come forward and resolve the issue themselves.
In the end, the peaceful situation that prevails following the conflict is absolutely pleasant. Firstly, we as citizens have to deal with matters peacefully in our family and society. Where there is equality, there should be no dominance or power. Instead, harmony and good governance are essential for ensuring peace in the country we live in. No one ever wishes to be involved in conflict situations. But, when we are unexpectedly aroused by a conflict situation, the state of calmness, peacefulness and happiness we were in before the conflict arose, is something to think about. If we address the problem in a much more sensible way, the problem will be resolved immediately and peacefully.
To sum it up, a conflict leads to anger, stress, overthinking, anxiety and depression, which would affect the overall mental and physical health of a person. Therefore, without unnecessarily giving into such situations, we should live in peace and harmony with one another.
