What’s the one thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “peace”?
For me it’s kindness,
Peace in many ways represents kindness, something that is sadly lacking in today’s world which is plagued by conflict.
Established in 1981 by the United Nations, the International Day of Peace is observed annually on the 21st of September. Its primary objective is to foster harmony among nations. But the question is after four decades can we truly say we have reaped the fruits of peace?
On World Peace Day, the UN calls for a global ceasefire but this plea is not honored everywhere. Even if it were, would it be out of a genuine need for peace or a temporary change and then, back to normalcy?
A heartbreaking real-life example is the ongoing struggle of the Palestinian people. This isn’t about race or religion, it’s about being human. Are we humane enough to empathize with their suffering?
As Mother Theresa wisely said, “Peace and war begin at home. If we truly want peace in the world, let us begin by loving one another in our own families”. The values we nurture at home shape the world we live in.
The absence of kindness and compassion is what fuels wars and rivalry.
As we approach the election season, once again people are divided by politics. Let’s hope we don’t fall into further division based on differences in faith.
For once, with all our hearts, let’s pledge to break this cycle of division and embrace one another to create a world filled with peace!
