“What are words if you don't mean them when you say them?”

While this question provides food for thought, let me take a moment to attribute the American singer Chris Medina, who voiced this brilliant masterpiece. I suppose there's no better day than the Fête de la Musique (World Music Day) to acknowledge him and his fantastic work. Released back in 2011, this song touched the hearts of many, unquestionably due to the empathetic story behind it. Following a traumatic accident, Medina's fiancée was subjected to severe brain injuries shortly before their wedding. Via this song, he displays the importance of promises and sticking together come rain or shine. If this song is new to you, then I request you to take a moment to listen to it. You won't regret it.

Having originated in Paris in 1982 and now celebrated annually on the 21st of June, World Music Day yields a sense of connection and togetherness through the collaboration of many music enthusiasts to witness popular singers, and amateur musicians perform in live concerts and streets. It can be as simple as someone who loves a good gig. It is a day dedicated to celebrating the very essence of melodies, traversing all boundaries and cultural diversity.

While there are a myriad of music genres in existence, some of the popular genres are pop, hip-hop/rap, country music, Indian classics, and electronic dance music. Nevertheless, as fellow Srilankans, let's not forget our very own legends of music who have left a legacy that is etched in our hearts. Who wouldn't be aware of the iconic baila band ‘Gypsies’ and its remarkable contributor, Sunil Perera, who is now deceased? One of his top-rated works of art is ‘Sumihiri Pane’ which became a hit among many. This industry cannot be limited solely to one. Many performers have contributed to making it entertaining while also generating their brand.

Music Day is widely celebrated in the UK, Japan, Peru, Canada, India, and many other cities. While some prefer slow-paced meaningful music, some of them are into beats and thrilling melodies. Regardless, this day is for everyone who enjoys just listening to their favourite songs.

Whether you're a music enthusiast or not, there is always something worthwhile to derive from whatever happens. To cut across and rise above all divisions and embrace each other's individuality through all domains and regimes is strikingly portrayed via the obvious display of harmony that is evident among the people gathered to celebrate World Music Day. As beautifully versed by Demi Lovato, sometimes you think you will be fine by yourself, but it's harder to walk on your own.

Let us bound ourselves by the enchanting virtue of union. Here's to a joyful world music day 2024!
